This is the 16th edition of the Blog Hop Wednesday and this month I am paired with Pari of Foodelicious. She has a wonderful blog with tons and tons of recipes and she also has the “only” event that is very popular. I picked these savory scones from her blog because I have recently been bit by the baking (savory) bug. Even K prefers savory stuff and the scones are low fat too. Spring onions gave a mild onion flavor and tasted great in the scones. I was also surprised at how easy these were to make, of course not when taking pictures . I adapted the recipe to the ingredients on hand and used store bought paneer since I had huge blocks of paneer lying in the freezer.
If anyone is wondering about paneer in freezer, well you might be surprised at the stuff I store in the freezer. The recent addition being butter and finally the big blocks of butter from Costco will not be wasted. Off to the recipe. Recipe adapted from Foodelicious.
Ingredients
2 cups all purpose flour
1/2 cup whole wheat flour
3/4 tsp salt
4 tsp baking powder
1 cup paneer crumbled
1/4 tsp ajwain
1/4 tsp cumin seeds (Jeeragam)
1/4 tsp chilly powder
1/4 tsp pepper powder
1/2 cup sliced scallions (spring onions)
3 tbsp chopped cilantro (coriander leaves)
3/4 cup milk
2 egg whites
Tasty scones with a little butter.
My Notes
1. There is no kneading involved. We are just going to pat the dough .
Method
Mix the dry ingredients together. (All purpose flour, wheat flour, salt and baking powder).
Add paneer and mix.
Add ajwain, cumin seeds, chilly powder and pepper powder. Mix.
Add spring onions and cilantro.
Mix it all together.
Combine egg and milk and add it to the dry ingredients.
Mix it with a spatula. The mix will be sticky.
Place mix in a slightly floured surface.
Form a ball using your hands.
Gently pat and flatten the ball forming a circle that is about 1/2 an inch thick.
Slice into pieces using a knife or a pizza cutter.
Preheat oven to 400F. Place the pieces on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. (I grease the parchment paper also). Bake for 15 minutes until the top is slightly browned.
I broiled for a few minutes for the tops to brown.
Savory scones ready. Soft on the inside and crispy on the outside, they were a perfect evening snack.
Enjoy!
These scones look interesting and I would like to try making these.
I am thinking of putting the dough into a loaf pan and bake it as bread. Hope this works out. What do you think?
Thanks
You could try. I think it might take a longer time to bake due to the size of the loaf.
First time here…Love this recipe and well explained…planning to try it for dinner:)

Looks like a must-try recipe – saving this for the weekend! Looks scrumptiuous
Wow! Your savory scones look so amazing! I have not tried baking savory scones before and what can I substitute paneer? It’s difficult for me to get that here.
Do you get ricotta cheese? That would be a nice substitute.
