5 green tomatoes (about 2 cups chopped)
1/4 cup moong dal
1 cup water
1/2 tsp oil
1/2 tsp mustard seeds
A pinch of asafoetida
3 tsp Kootu Podi
Preparing the kootu podi in bulk and storing in airtight containers helps to makes kootu in a jiffy.
Prepare the kootu podi by roasting and grinding the ingredients as mentioned in the Avarakai Kootu post.

Chop the tomatoes and take in a vessel along with moong dal.
Add water and pressure cook for about 3 whistles. (About 10 minutes.) I use a pressure cooker since it saves time. You can use any vessel.
Cooked and ready.
Heat oil and add mustard seeds.
When the mustard seeds splutters, add the cooked tomato and dal.
Add the kootu podi and mix well. Simmer for 5 minutes and turn the stove off.
Ready to serve.
