Green Gram Dal, Carrot and Potato Curry

Green gram dal is for day 7 of the blogging marathon. I initially had a different dish planned for G, but when Saras announced the ingredients for Dish-It-Out, I changed my mind. The only change that I made to the usual recipe was that I added carrots. When my MIL visited us years back, she made this side dish for rotis and I instantly loved it. There is something about the ginger and dal combo and it is also very easy to make. Should I mention that it is healthy too? :) .

Chillies and ginger are the important ingredients in this dish. Adjust those according to taste. Off to the healthy recipe.

 Healthy bowl of dal.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup green gram dal
  • 1 cup chopped potatoes
  • 1/2 cup chopped carrots
  • 2 tsp oil
  • 1/4 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 cup chopped onions
  • 3 green chillies
  • 1/2 cup chopped tomatoes
  • 1 cup water
  • Salt
  • 1 tsp ginger paste
  • Coriander leaves to garnish

Method

Take green gram dal, potatoes and carrot in a vessel and pressure cook the same. You can also do this on the stove top, but pressure cooking saves time.

Out of the pressure cooker.

Heat oil and splutter mustard seeds. Add onions and green chillies.

Saute until onions are done.

Add tomatoes.

Cook until the tomatoes turn mushy.

Add the cooked dal+veggie mixture.

Add about a cup of water.

Add salt.

Add ginger paste.

Mix it all together and simmer for 5 minutes. Then turn the stove off. Garnish with coriander leaves.

Tasty side dish ready.
