Tomato – Soya Chunks Pulao

Posted By Vardhini On November 11, 2011 @ 6:21 am In Gallery,Healthy Recipes,Indian,Kid Friendly,Main Dish | 2 Comments

The first dish which comes to my mind when I think of soya chunks is this rice and I make it pretty often. Soya chunks reminds me of the childhood days when my mom used to add it to biriyani. It was called meal maker. Soya is a very good source of protein and the bonus in my house is that my kids like it too. This rice is a slight variation of the Tomato Potato Channa Pulao which I had posted earlier. This is a one pot meal making it ideal for those week nights. Any raita or chips go perfectly with this rice and the recipe is pretty simple too. I have added only peas, but you can add any vegetable of choice.

This dish goes to my Dish it Out event featuring Soy chunks and Tomatoes. Off to the simple recipe.

Ingredients
1 cup soya chunks soaked in hot water
1.5 cups uncooked basmati rice soaked in water for 15 minutes.
1 tbsp oil
Few cloves and a small piece of cinnamon
1 small onion
3 green chillies
1 tsp ginger paste
2 garlic cloves chopped or 1 tsp garlic paste
3 tomatoes
1/2 cup peas
3 cups water
Salt
1 tsp chilly powder
1/4 tsp turmeric powder

Method
Take the soya chunks in a bowl and pour hot water over it and let it stand for 10 minutes.

See how it has all plumped up.

I broke them into smaller pieces after squeezing the water off them. If you use mini chunks, you just have to squeeze the water out.

Heat oil and add cloves, cinnamon, onion and green chillies.

Add ginger paste and garlic paste. Saute until onions are done.

Next add the chopped tomatoes. Wait till the tomatoes turn mushy.

When the tomatoes turn mushy add the soy chunks and peas.

Add the soaked rice.

Add water, turmeric and chilly powder. (Remember we have also added green chillies, so adjust chilly powder accordingly.)

Mix it all and close the pressure pan or vessel. Steam for 10-15 minutes until the rice is done.

Rice is cooked and ready. Fluff it up gently.

Healthy and tasty soya chunks pulao ready and we had it with spinach raita.

Enjoy!
