Roasted Chickpeas(Garbanzo)

Day 2 of the 10th edition of blogging marathon and my theme is “Guilt Free Snacks”. Using the oven instead of deep frying makes a lot of snacks healthy. I have been raving about garbanzo also known as chickpeas or channa in most of my posts and it should be no surprise that this is on the list this week. Added to that I have been constantly looking out for what I could bake for the Bake Fest and my poor oven is screaming for some rest :) .
This snack is very easy to make and if you are using canned beans, it is a breeze. Even otherwise it is not that bad since soaking and pressure cooking beans is something which a lot of people do frequently. The spices for this recipe can be varied based on availability and desired flavor. I went with the flavors I like namely cumin and chat masala. Feel free to experiment with spices of choice. Now off to the step-by-step recipe.

Ingredients
1.5 cups dry garbanzo soaked overnight (Canned garbanzo can also be used)
Salt to taste
Chilly powder to taste
1 tsp cumin powder
1 tsp chat masala
Oil to spray

Method
Preheat oven to 400F.

If using the dry garbanzo(chickpeas) soak overnight and pressure cook until done. If using canned garbanzo skip this step and directly add the seasonings.

The garbanzo is cooked.

To the cooked garbanzo add salt.

Add red chilly powder.

Add cumin powder.

Add chat masala.

Toss it all together.

Spray a baking sheet and spread the garbanzo in it. I have used aluminium foil for easy cleanup. Bake in a 400F preheated oven for 40 – 50 minutes until the beans turn crunchy.

Remember that the beans get more crunchy on cooling. So remove from oven accordingly and not wait for it to turn completely crunchy. Then we will probably end up with something like small pebbles which are hard to bite.

Out of the oven.

Crunchy and healthy snack ready for munching.
Enjoy!
