Pudhina Thogayal (Mint Chutney)

Posted By Vardhini On September 10, 2011 @ 1:31 pm In Condiments,Healthy Recipes,Indian,Quick & Easy,Under 30 minutes | No Comments

This is one of my favorite condiments and my grandma used to pair it with rasam rice for a simple and comforting weeknight dinner. Since I can get a hold on mint leaves only once in 2-3 months I had forgotten about this thogayal and any time I buy mint it was always mint pulao or mint raita. So when I chose condiments for the recent blogging marathon I prepared this. As always I gave a call to my mom to confirm as it had been awhile since I made this mint thogayal. When I tasted it I had this nostalgic feeling which took me back 20 yrs. It was made exactly the same way and it tasted the same too.

Now coming to the pictures, I was making 2 condiments that day and taking pictures of both. What was I thinking? Well condiments are easy to make, but the presentation and picture part takes time. So after taking a picture of the Ellu Podi I started with this one. We had guests at home and hungry kids at the table. So I clicked what I could in 5 minutes. The lesson learnt is, however, simple the dish is, stick with one a day when taking pictures.

Mint thogayal can be used as a side dish for idli, dosa, rice, etc. I like it best with rasam rice as mentioned. Off to the simple and tasty mint thogayal.

Ingredients
1 tsp oil
2 cups mint (1 bunch mint cleaned)
2 tsp urad dal
2 green chillies
Small piece of tamarind
Salt

Method
Heat oil and add urad dal and green chillies.

Add the mint leaves.

Saute for few minutes until the leaves wilt.

Let it cool. Take a small piece of tamarind and add to it.

Add salt.

Everything ready for blending. Blend to a fine paste with very little water. We want it to be thick.

That is it. Minty and tangy chutney ready.

Enjoy!
