Rasam powder is a staple in most Indian houses. Rasam can be made in minutes by having this powder on hand. This is my mom’s version and I cannot believe this is the first time I am making it although I have been using it for 10 years :) . I normally pack it from India when we visit. This is a simple powder with just 3 ingredients.

The key is to roast the ingredients until a nice aroma floats. Stay near the stove while roasting as it can turn black pretty quick. This powder can be used to make a variety of rasams like paruppu rasam, tomato rasam, garlic rasam, etc. Stay tuned for some interesting rasam recipes. Off to the rasam powder recipe.

Make rasam in minutes with this powder on hand.

1/4 cup peppercorns (Milagu)
1/4 cup cumin seeds (Jeeragam)
1/2 cup toor dal (Thuvaram Paruppu)

Roast the peppercorns.

Next the cumin seeds get roasted.

Finally the toor dal.

Allow to cool.

Take in a blender or coffee grinder.

Grind to a powder. (It does not need to be really fine. Slightly coarse is also OK.)

Pack in an airtight container and make rasam in a jiffy :) .
