This is a simple dish and is a nice variation to the usual pongal. The main difference is that the rice is replaced with rava in this dish. Also, onions are not traditionally added to pongal, but it adds a nice flavor in this variation of Pongal. Since Pongal is better when it is mushy, rava blends in well with dal to give that consistency. Off to the recipe.
Rava Pongal
Lentil based dish that is normally served for breakfast.
Ingredients:
- moong dal - 1/2 cup
- rava - 1 cup
- onion - 1 cup - chopped
- green chilly - 1
- water - 4 - 4 1/2 cups
- salt - to taste
- ghee - 1 - 2 tsp

- Tempering Ingredients
- oil - 2 tsp
- cashews - a few
- cumin seeds - 1/2 tsp
- peppercorns - 1 tsp
- curry leaves - a few
- ginger - small piece - cut into bits
Instructions:
Cook the dal with enough water and keep aside. Dry roast the rava and keep aside.
Heat oil and add the rest of the tempering ingredients. Saute for a minute or so and then add onions and green chilly. When onions are cooked add water and salt.
Bring the water to a boil and add the rava while stirring continuously. Cover and allow the rava to cook. It just takes 5 minutes or so. Next add the cooked dal and ghee.
Mix well and serve with chutney of choice.
I added more water to get a thinner consistency. Adjust according to taste.
