Ever since we returned from India, I have been so swamped and have very little time to do any extra cooking. Most of our meals include lentils in one form or the other and cooking something with lentils was easy since it would be our lunch or dinner that day. I also use lentils to jazz up any boring vegetable or if I do not have enough of a particular vegetable.
Kootu is a lentil dish and is mostly paired with some spicy kuzhambu. Having made kootu with the usual cabbage, beans, etc. I decided to use broccoli for a change and also used a combination of dals instead of the usual moong dal. It tasted great and another dish added to my menu. Off to the recipe.

Healthy broccoli lentil gravy.
Blend the ingredients for paste and keep aside. Cook the dals and keep aside.
Heat oil and splutter mustard seeds. Add broccoli, salt, asafoetida and a cup of water and allow the broccoli to cook. When it is cooked, add the paste. After 5 minutes add the cooked dal.
Turn off the stove and serve with rice or roti.
2. Cooked dal. I used a pressure cooker. Keep aside.
3. Take red chillies, cumin seeds and coconut in a blender.
4. Blend to a paste. Keep aside.
5. Heat oil and splutter mustard seeds.
6. Add the broccoli, salt and asafoetida.
7. Add about a cup of water and allow the broccoli to cook.
8. When the broccoli is cooked, add the paste.
9. After say 5 minutes, add the cooked dal.
10. Mix well and turn the stove off.
Enjoy!
