Did you end up with a lot of leftover idlis? No worries, they transform into this yummy upma that is very easy to make. We love it so much that we make idli just to make this upma. You can also add vegetables to this upma. My sisters keep roasting the upma over a low flame until it crisps up a bit, but I don’t have the patience for it . K does not like idli, but is ok with upma and hence this dish is on the menu often. If using fresh idlis, allow to cool before crumbling. Off to the recipe.
Ingredients
10 regular size idlis
1 tsp oil
1/4 tsp mustard seeds
1 tsp urad dal
1 tsp channa dal
1 cup chopped onion
2 green chillies
1/4 tsp turmeric powder
Pinch of red chilly powder
Salt if needed
Method
Leftover idli crumbled and ready for upma.
Heat oil and splutter mustard seeds. Add urad dal and channa dal.
When the dal turns golden brown add onions and chopped chillies.
Onions are done.
Add the crumbled idli. I have used leftover corn idli along with regular idli.
Add chilly powder, turmeric and salt. (Taste before adding salt since idli has salt.)
Mix well. Simmer for 15-20 minutes stirring every few minutes.
Upma ready.
Tasty upma ready.
Enjoy!
