Ribbon Pakoda (Diwali Snacks)

Is everybody busy making sweets and savories for Diwali? Well I am and I have a big list to get through. Ribbon Pakoda is K’s favorite and I make it whether it is Diwali or not. It is an easy snack and uses minimal ingredients, not to mention the taste. Most things deep fried are certainly addictive and this is one of them.
All these festivals remind me of the childhood days when the snacks were divided and placed in separate boxes for each kid. I used to be the last one finishing up the snacks as I used to enjoy each and every bite. I sure took the whole process of making these snacks for granted and never once found out the recipe. Thanks to the internet and the faithful book which K brought with him my life is easy now. So everybody, have fun making sweets and savories. Off to the receipe.

Ingredients
1.5 cups besan (Gram flour / Kadala Maavu)
1/2 cup rice flour
1 tsp chilly powder
Salt
2 tsp ghee
Water to make dough

Method
Take the besan and rice flour in a bowl.

Add chilly powder and salt.

Add ghee.

Crumble the mix together.

Add water and make a stiff dough.

You need a murukku maker to make ribbon pakoda. I have shown the disc which we use for ribbon pakoda in the picture.

Load the murukku maker with dough and hold it directly over the oil and form the ribbon pakodas.

In the hot oil.

Ready and crispy.
So all was well with the disc I chose, except that the ribbon pakodas were thick like garlands :)

So I went through the stuff in the basement and found this old murukku maker and decided to use this disc. I loaded it with dough and positioned it over oil and was literally huffing and puffing to get the dough out. It was HARD and I decided to go back to my faithful murukku maker.

Two eyes staring at you !!

I almost gave up when I spotted this disc. Not even sure where I was looking when I was searching for discs. This was the perfect one for me. It was thin and crispy, but K preferred the thick ones.

So it was a happy snacking for both of us.

Looking at this picture makes me want to make it again soon. Crunchy and tasty snack ready.

Enjoy!
