In the days when refrigerators were not common people sure knew how to use leftovers. Anything leftover gets transformed into yummy stuff the next day. You have leftover idlis and they become idli upma, sour yogurt becomes mor kuzhambu and so on. Similarly if there was leftover kozhukattai dough after making the sweet or savory ones for Vinayaka Chaturthi, they get transformed into these addictive mini kozhukattais. There are two simple methods to prepare these and I will show both.
In this modern age, I don’t consider anything a leftover and everything gets packed neatly in the fridge for next day’s meal. Ahh the luxury of refrigerators. As I am writing this, I have to say that my fridge quit working 2 weeks ago. It was a nightmare and not something you want to come back to after work. Thanks to my friends we had a small fridge for a week and now a full-size one until we purchase our new one.
Now off to preparing these mini kozhukattais.

Another look. This one is prepared using leftover pooranam from savory kozhukattais.

Before we get to the recipe, let us talk about the winner of the 100th post giveaway. I used Random.orgto pick the winner of the giveaway.

The person corresponding to the number is njampani.

njampani – Please check your inbox for my email and respond asap. In the event I don’t hear from you within a week, I would have to choose another winner.
Now off to the recipe.

Ingredients – Method 1
Kozhukattai dough
1/2 tsp oil
1/2 tsp mustard seeds
1/2 tsp urad dal
Curry leaves
Asafoetida
Turmeric

Ingredients – Method 2
Kozhukattai dough
1/2 tsp oil
Leftover pooranam from Uppu Kozhukattai
Turmeric

Method – 1
Prepare the dough as mentioned in Ellu Kozhkattai or use leftovers.

Pinch a small portion of the dough.

Make a small ball by rolling it between your palms. (Size of seedai)

Steam for 10 minutes similar to idli.

See how glossy they look after steaming.

Heat oil and add mustard seeds. When they splutter add urad dal, red chillies and curry leaves.

When the dals turn golden brown add the steamed kozhukattais.

Add tumeric and asafoetida.

Toss them together. Turn off the stove. That is it.

Method – 2
This method uses leftover pooranam from the savory kozhukattais. Heat about 1/2 tsp of oil. Add the leftover pooranam

All other seasonings have already been added to the pooranam. So I just added turmeric alone. Mix.

Add the steamed kozhukattais.

Toss them together and turn the stove off. Simple and easy.

Another look at the addictive kozhukattais. Don’t they look pretty. They were gone in no time :) .

Enjoy!
