Granita is a semi-frozen dessert made using sugar, water and flavorings. For granita, we freeze the liquid and then at intervals we stir it with a fork to break it creating ice crystals. This way we get a coarse texture. Difference between sorbet and granita is that the latter is made by hand and has a coarse texture.
This is a new dessert for me and after seeing it in various blogs I decided to try it. It is simple to make and uses minimal ingredients. Any fruit like watermelon, grapes, pineapple, etc. can be used. This is also a healthy dessert and requires no ice cream maker. My friends who visited enjoyed this a lot and it is going to be frequent on the menu.
Lesson learned .. get the camera ready when dealing with frozen stuff. By the time I could get the camera out, the granita started melting. Off to the recipe.
Ingredients
1.5 cups chopped strawberries
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup water
1 tbsp lemon juice
Method
Clean and chop the strawberries.
Take water and sugar in a blender and blend until sugar is dissolved.
Add strawberries and lemon juice to the sugar water and blend until smooth.
Pour in a deep stainless steel vessel and refrigerate. (Any metal vessel would work since we will be using a fork to scrape it)
After 3 hours it is partially frozen.
Stir mixture using a fork. Scrape all the ice bits on the sides too.
Refrigerate again for 5 hours or overnight.
When ready to serve, just scrape it with a fork and you are good to go. Guilt free healthy dessert ready to be served.
Enjoy!
