Brussels Sprouts Dal (Lentil) Curry

Another simple and tasty recipe (Indian style) with brussel sprouts. This vegetable although healthy is most likely to be on the hated list for many people. I have tried making it in different ways, but the simple recipes are always the winner. Take any recipe for cabbage and use brussel sprouts instead. Except for the slight tinge of bitterness there is no difference in taste between brussels sprouts and cabbage.
I try to include dal / legumes in most of my dishes as that is a main source of protein for us. Brussel Sprouts combined with dal becomes a wholesome side dish which goes well with rice or rotis although I prefer to have any dal based curry with the comforting vatha kuzhambu. You can make this a gravy dish or a dry dish based on need. One thing to remember is to not overcook this vegetable. Turn off the stove when brussel sprouts still have a bite to it. So now off to the simple recipe and I am happy to be clearing out my archives
You can find the other brussels sprouts dish here.
Ingredients
1/2 cup toor dal cooked
1 tsp oil
1/4 tsp mustard seeds
1/2 tsp urad dal
2 red chillies
1 pound brussel sprouts chopped
Salt
Turmeric
Method
Pressure cook the toor dal. Clean and chop the brussel sprouts.
Heat oil. Season with mustard seeds, urad dal and red chillies.
Add the chopped brussel sprouts, salt and turmeric powder. Sprinkle some water if needed for the vegetable to cook.
Brussel sprouts are cooked.
Add the dal.
Mix well and turn off the stove after 2-3 minutes.
Simple right? Yummy brussel sprouts ready to be served.
Enjoy!
